Bye Bye Bazaar……

….well not exactly, because we all hope to have our Bazaar again on 13 November 2021 in the lovely premises at the Liebfrauenkirche. But it’s farewell from me after 10 (or is it 11?) years of helping with the organisation. Most of the time I worked with and was mentored kindly by Ann Christen, who was calm, well-organised and who knew so much about St Andrew’s and the Bazaar itself. As a member of the St Gallen community when I lived in the ‘Ostschweiz‘, I used to come to the Bazaar and enjoy a day out, meeting friends, revelling in the bustle and the crackers and mincemeat. Little did I know what an amazing amount of work lay behind it! Getting involved in the organisation and helping a bit with sorting has shown me what commitment, energy and sheer hard graft goes into St Andrew’s Bazaar. At the end of the Saturday, the previous caretaker at Enge always used to say to me how impressed he was with the efficiency of the Stallholders and their helpers and the feeling of solidarity and the “let’s get on with it” attitude that he experienced while we were there. Thank you from me to all of you who I have worked with during these Bazaar years – you’re the tops!

At the beginning of this year we were excited to secure the new premises at Liebfrauen and now we can look forward to being there next year. The creativity and energy that have gone into the alternative fund-raising activities this COVID year have been impressive and I personally hope very much that the after-church sales and online sales will continue next year, maybe parallel to the Bazaar. As the bells ring out this tough year, let’s be hopeful for the next….

Ring out old shapes of foul disease;

Ring out the narrowing lust of gold;

Ring out the thousand wars of old,

Ring in the thousand years of peace.

Ring in the valiant man and free,

The larger heart, the kindlier hand;

Ring out the darkness of the land,

Ring in the Christ that is to be.
